Notes:
This looks very good for SD (the film itself is, of course, excellent :-D). I wouldn't say no to a Blu-ray, but I guess we have to be thankful for what we've got, as the film probably didn't do very well sales-wise here; can't really say the cinema was packed when we went to see it - there were 11 (!) people besides me and my wife, and 2 of them walked out halfway through the film. :-P Well, here's hoping the DVD does better! (c:

Oh, in case you're wondering what I meant by the 1st footnote below (*) - basically, there's no way to play the entire film in Czech with subtitles, as Švankmajer's (hilarious) intro is not subtitled (well, it is - in Czech HoH ;-)), so "non-Czech" speakers need to go the "intro w/ voice-over + the rest subtitled" way (no worries though - I hear that's how the film was presented at festivals abroad)...

*6 different video "angles" are provided for the first 4:22 of the film. They consist of an introduction by Jan Švankmajer (3:16, in Czech, resp. Czech with English, French, Spanish, Italian or German voice-over — NO subtitles) & the opening title sequence (1:06, in Czech, English, French, Spanish, Italian, resp. German). The choice depends on the selected menu language, even though the actual menus are only available in Czech & English (i.e. selecting French, Spanish, Italian or German triggers the respective voice-over, but the menus default to English)
**with optional Czech for the hearing impaired & English subtitles
***with the same subtitle tracks as the main feature

As far as I can tell, the changes compared to the original release are minimal: different menus & distributor logos + the [slightly augmented] extras in italics above.
The video streams themselves are bitwise identical; thus, at the bottom of this page, you'll find only one set of screenshots representing both Athanor DVDs.

This Blu-ray collection was one of the perks for the supporters of Švankmajer's Indiegogo campaign intended for co-financing his ultimate film, "Hmyz" ("Insect"), and it's not commercially available at the time of this writing.

This and the Japanese counterpart obviously come from the same master, the only difference being the more generous bitrate of the latter. Despite that, the 2 encodes are pretty much indistinguishable.
