| Notes: | This is a recording from ČT art HD's digital satellite broadcast. Its purpose here is to provide a kind of reference for the DVD release reviewed above. And while it doesn't really make sense to point out deficiencies in something that's not an actual product one could buy, we're gonna do just that. ;-)
The thing is that although the level of detail here, on what we presume is a modern HD scan, easily (and understandably) surpasses that of the 2008 DVD, the source element used must've been in a MUCH worse shape, as the amount of spectacular print damage on display is... just... INCREDIBLE! :-O
Firstly, snippets of footage are missing - from a couple of frames' worth at a scene change here (unnoticeable) or mid-scene there (relatively easy to spot):
|
| |
to tens of frames (very noticeable), the longest dropout clocking at 1.56s (39 frames):
|
| |
Overall, 12.52s (313 frames) of footage is gone...
"Missing footage is all well and good, but not exactly... SPECTACULAR," we hear you say; well, if that's what you want, look no further than right here:
|
| |
And here's one more particularly exciting sequence in its entirety, just because standa.e liked it sooo much (the following is a JavaScript animation):
| << step | start/stop animation | step >>
0 % loaded... | |
The animation encapsulates a representative collection of the types of print damage, whether accidental (dirt, scratches & whatnot) or intentional (the rather distinctive-looking set of "cue blips"), that's liberally peppered throughout the film; and - however strange this may sound - it looks great! I can't but agree with standa.e that these... "wounded" images give the film... a lot greater sense of immediacy... a nearly palpable atmosphere...
It's a pity that when the NFA eventually get around to restoring "Coach to Vienna," they will make it all nice and clean... so clean... and sterile...
Anyhoo, something... odd, for lack of a better word, happens near the end of the film, but as it could be reckoned a spoiler, proceed at your own risk:
| | Show Spoiler | | |
There's an awkward fadeout (on the DVD too) just as the two protagonists at last fall for each other, so we don't get to see what - if anything at all - has in fact... transpired between them; "intimacy" is implied in the scenes that follow, but... Interestingly enough, the photogallery on the DVD contains two stills (one of which some wise guy at Bonton used as a menu screen - spoilers ahoy! :-P) that indicate the possibility of a more... erm, "revealing" footage having been shot, but ultimately not used in the final cut of the film:
