| Notes: | I won't be the first one to say that this UK DVD is awful. Not only is the transfer severely cropped, washed out, and generally horrible, moreover, it's partially interlaced, and it's missing around 18 seconds** of footage! It's mostly just a few frames here & there, however, there are a few places where as much as 89 frames (almost 4 seconds) are missing. Following is a visual index of the missing footage (the screenshots come from the French version; mouse over the images to see the number of frames missing @ a given time in the UK DVD):

|
Concerning the interlacing, what we see here is the same issue I pointed out in my reviews of " Conan the Barbarian," " Deváté srdce" & " Fistful of Dollars" - at certain points, the video stream seems to be interlaced, but it's in fact shifted by 1 field (wrong field order?). The main difference between genuine interlacing & this issue is that it's possible to get rid of it completely by correcting the field order. Unfortunately, you'd have to re-encode the video stream to be able to see the results. I did this for the purposes of this review, and the following are examples of the aforementioned issue / re-encoded (corrected) frames / reference frames from the French edition:
| 57260 / 57260 / 57657 | 63791 / 63791 / 64184 | 91907 / 91907 / 92428 | 120140 / 120140 / 120821
| |
I'm closing this review with the last couple of screenshots, demonstrating that some print damage can be found on the French DVD as well, however, it's also present in the UK transfer, and my guess is it comes directly from the original film negative:
| 86252 / 86253 | 85829 / 85830
| |
*difference between channels is -52.43 dB (0.24 %) **not counting the 260 frames (10 seconds) cut off of the end-credits |
