Despite knowing this edition didn't respect the film's intended AR, I was quite curious about it, because of this French page saying that the transfer created from an Italian interpositive struck directly from the original negative easily eclipses the (almost indistinguishable from the Japanese one) Fantoma (R0 / NTSC) release. Well, in some instances, the transfer does look better - more detailed for one thing (see e.g. the trees in the background in frame 17258), in others, however, the restoration process (I guess) seems to have obliterated some detail instead (see e.g. the splinters/snowflakes in frames 124764/141743), and the result is made even worse by poor compression (see e.g. the ugly macro-blocking in frame 106719). A chance lost, if I'm any judge...
