Whatever the circumstantial evidence, I think I like the old version better. Yes, it's heavily cropped on the left side (but not as a rule), yes, parts of the transfer are interlaced:

but I've seen the DVD so many times - it's one of my favourite films - that for example the scene at the cemetery is more pleasing to my eyes in the orangey tones of the old edition...
